Beating sense into the day's news

Conformite, Egalite, Fratricide

The French parliament overwhelmingly voted today (494 to 36) to ban overt religious garb from public schools. In doing so, it vaults past most other western countries in the international hypocrisy race. France's famed slogan, Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite, is a tough fit for a society that suppresses the free and peaceful expression of religious/political ideas. Compulsion in education, as noted in an earlier post, has historically caused a lot more strife than simple diversity.
