The Right to Choose

A Utah school voucher bill for disabled students took a step closer to passage yesterday when it was approved by the House. It now goes to the Senate where it has a better-than-even chance of approval.

This bill would allow parents of disabled children who are not satisfied with their public school options to choose a private school instead, and to receive a state-funded voucher to cover some or all of the tuition.

If enacted, Utah's disabled student vouchers would be the second such program in the nation, after the McKay scholarship program in Florida. According to a study conducted last year by Jay Greene of the Manhattan Institute, McKay scholarships are extremely popular with the parents who participate in the program.
