The Price of Spam

Remember kids, don't do blog maintenance when you're sleepy.

Got in late last night (for me), logged-on to check my e-mail, and discovered 65 new spam posts to this blog (which gets a lot of spam atempts despite its low-visibility--go figure). Feeling too-clever-by-half, I decided to try bulk deleting these spams using the database interface that serves as the back end for the Movable Type blog software ('cause MT itself provides no bulk comment maintenance interface).

Well, I was tired, and the database interface provides neither warning messages nor undo, and so I managed to accidentally nuke ALL COMMENTS to this site to date. Ouch.

I managed to back 'em up by downloading the archives of the site, but this does not allow me to re-enter them into the database. That means the next time I post, i.e. this time, all the comments will be blown away. I can either reenter them individually using cut and paste (which I've done for a few recent posts) or take the time to write a little program to do it (which doesn't seem appealing).

Anyway, if you're wondering what happened to all the comments, well, now you know.

From now on I'll be making regular _restorable_ backups of the site!!!

Sigh
