The Times Online has a follow-up article on the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh. Apparently, two Dutch politicians who have been critical of Islam, Ayaan Hirsi Ali (who we already know was explicitly threatened in the note that was left by Mr. van Gogh's killer) and Geert Wilders, have had to be taken to safe-houses due to threats they've received since the murder of Van Gogh. The article includes some indications as to how the Dutch plan to deal with Islamic radicalism in general:
Rita Verdonk, the Dutch Immigration Minister, announced that the government would introduce a law to strip Islamic radicals with dual nationality of their Dutch passports. There are nearly a million Muslims in the Netherlands, mainly from Morocco and Turkey, and the majority maintain dual nationality. She said the law would be changed “so that when a person is suspected of planning or involvment in extremism or serious crimes we will take away their Dutch passport”. Under separate proposals, imams will be required to teach Dutch values in mosques.
Ms Verdonk said that the Netherlands had been “naive” in failing to deal with deep divisions in Dutch society. “For too long we have said we had a multicultural society. We were too naive in thinking people would exist in society together,” she said.
Along the same lines, reporter Steve Harrigan has been in Europe working on stories about Muslim immigration there, which he summarizes very briefly in his blog. This post in particular gets to the heart of the problem: Muslim immigrants in Europe do not seem to be assimilating the way other groups of immigrants have. I can't say enough nice things about Mr. Harrigan's reporting -- he comes the closest of any current-day reporter to matching the sort of detached, factual reporting I see in the newspapers of the 40's and 50's. The MSM would not be losing so much ground to blogs if they had more people like him.
UPDATE (1:4pm PT):
Just saw that Captain's Quarters has a good post along these same lines.
