EurasiaNet has a nice little photo essay showing Afghanis playing golf on a "desert style" course that they've cobbled together. The gist of the article is Afghanis attempting to rebuild their civil society:
Amid the tumult of Afghanistan’s reconstruction, a fortunate few are trying to rediscover the concept of leisure. The Kabul Golf Club is among the recreational options that have appeared in and around the Afghan capital. But as this photo essay by Patrick Andrade illustrates, a round of golf features some unique hazards.
One of the things that my frequent perusal of old newspapers has given me is an interest in the way that big changes can occur over time even when a glance at the short term makes it look like things are never going to budge. I find that little details like the opening of a golf course can help give a glimpse at the long-term picture.
