Popular college professor Glenn Reynolds has argued that annoying college professor Ward Churchill should not be fired. Prof. Reynolds suggests that professorial tenure and academic freedom should be sacrosanct, no matter how much of a moral and intellectual embarassment a professor becomes.
But in a college generously subsidized by compulsory taxation, this notion is problematic. Is it right to make the great mass of people pay for Mr. Churchill's salary against their will?
Why not privatize higher education instead? Finance it through private human capital loans instead of through government loans or grants. Then no one would be compelled to pay for instruction that violates their convictions, and colleges would truly live and die based on their ability to attract customers willing to pay for the services they offer.
Churchill can say whatever he likes so long as I don't have to pay for it.
