Beating sense into the day's news

Dick Wead

The New York Times ran a story yesterday based on video tapes of conversations with George W. Bush that were recorded without his knowledge prior to the 2000 election.

The conversations were taped surreptitiously by Doug "Dick" Wead, who had apparently given then-Governor Bush the impression that he was a friend.

Why release the tapes now?

Dick Wead told the reporters to whom he revealed the tapes that "I just felt that the historical point I was making trumped a personal relationship."

Don't bother to parse that sentence. Don't bother to wonder why Wead couldn't wait 47 months to make his "historical" point.

As the Times piece notes: "As the author of a new book about presidential childhoods, Mr. Wead could benefit from any publicity".

"Could" is the operative word. Personally, I wouldn't give this dick weed a dime.

To paraphrase Peter O'Toole in "Lawrence of Arabia," Wead is a little man, a petty man, greedy and barbarous. What is it that makes some people value a few extra greenbacks and a little notoriety more than honor, dignity, and integrity?
