Here's an offer that no parent, no taxpayer, should refuse: Universal Education Tax Credits. UETCs would provide private scholarships for low-income children (so they could attend a private or public school at their parents' discretion) and would provide personal tax credits for other parents to help them cover the cost of private school tuition if they choose private schools for their kids.
Why shouldn't you refuse? Not because someone's holding a gun to your head, but simply because such a program would increase parental education choices dramatically while saving state taxpayers about a billion dollars per year.
A new study by Clemson University economist Cotton Lindsay concludes that South Carolina's proposed Put Parents in Charge education tax credit program would save $931 million dollars per year by making it easier for parents to choose private schools.
The study has been endorsed by a who's who of Southern and national economists, including Nobel Laureate (and all around swell guy) Milton Friedman.
Don't have a UETC program under consideration in your state? Call or e-mail your congressman!
