Putting the "Gomer" back in Gomery

Canada's "Gomery Commission," charged with investigating the political corruption scandal known as Adscam, imposed a Canadian publication ban on the content of its proceedings.

Uh, yeah, THAT's gonna work.

Captain's Quarters Blog has blown the ban all to hell with his big information disseminating guns, and the Canadian media are in a feeding frenzy trying to figure out how to cover the story without actually covering it. Meanwhile, any Canuck with an Internet connection can type [Brault Gomery blog] into Google and learn whatever they'd like about the case.

Basically, the "publication ban" is nothing of the kind. It is simply a tax being levied on the Canadian media for the benefit of American and other bloggers. Unless Canada wants to start confiscating every computer and Internet appliance in the country, telling Canadians they can't learn about Adscam is going to be like telling Liberal Party politicians they can't panic.

The bigger lesson of Adscam is the absolutely corrupting effect of absolute power. Oh, wait, that was a lesson that we were already supposed to have learned. Oh well, here's another chance:

This is what happens when you have only a single viable political party for more than a decade.

Of course, it's your country, people. You can do whatever you like with it. If you want to keep perpetuating this corrupt political monopoly, good luck with that.

Update 3:41pm, April 4:

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but wasn't it a corruption scandal that all but eradicated the Canadian Conservative party a decade or so ago? Adscam was already brewing before the last Canadian election and the public still put the Liberals back in office. I wonder what'll happen if there's another election called in the near future and the Adscam story continues to blossom? Do Canadians love Liberal politicians so much (and/or hate Conservative politicians so much) that they'll put the Liberals back in yet again?

If so, I may just have to move back to Canada and run for office as a Liberal -- I mean that's some kinda gig they've got going up there. The only problem would be the American citizenship thing. But I'm sure Canadians would be delighted to vote an American into office, right?
