Beating sense into the day's news

Holy Hypocrisy, Batman!

An excellent piece appears in the Wall Street Journal, today, pointing out the hypocrisy of Saudi Arabia's criticism of the recent Koran-in-toilet non-incident.

I have one thing to add. Under Wahhabism, one of the greatest sins is idolatry, which is seen as polytheism. Even Muslims who pray to (or inappropriately revere) Mohammed or the early Imams are considered polytheists, as are Muslims who erect almost any sort of shrine. Well, at some point, surely the elevation of particular printed copies of the Koran becomes "shirk" (polytheism), too, no? Surely, under Wahhabism, it's the words themselves, not any particular manifestation of them on dead trees, that are to be revered. Seems like another case of hypocrisy to me.

The violent response to the report of "Quranic abuse" isn't about faith, it's about intolerance.
