With no further ado, here are my thoughts on "Serenity"
Pros:
- Beautifully choreographed martial arts scenes
- Excellent photography of same
- Several mild chuckles from the attempts at witty repartee that were not telegraphed or hackneyed
Cons:
- Became tedious after the first six hours
- Dialogue that strives, but generally fails, to be witty
- Cowboy idiom written for the lead was not paired with matching accent, making it impossible to take the lead seriously
- Insufficient novelty to liven up the stale story template ("plucky band of attractive rebels goes up against evil empire by which they are badly out-gunned")
- Internally inconsistent behavior by the heavy at the end of the flick stretches the audience's already saggy credulity
- Insufficient use of the brilliant martial arts choreographer's talents
All in all, you're better off staying home and rewatching a Jacky Chan flick for the fight scenes and an early Cary Grant comedy for the dialogue (e.g., "His Girl Friday"). For something a little closer to this genre, try the superior: "Galaxy Quest."
